died tony hillerman author books detective novels

Tony Hillerman was born May 27, 1925 and died October 26, 2008. He was an American author of detective novels and non fiction works.
Tony Hillerman: The Art of the Mystery

His mystery novels are set in the Four Corners area of New Mexico and Arizona. The protagonists are Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee of the Navajo tribal police. Lt. Leaphorn was introduced in Hillerman's first novel, The Blessing Way 1970. The second book in the series, Dance Hall of the Dead 1973, won a 1974 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Novel. In 1991, Hillerman received the MWA's Grand Master Award. Hillerman has also received the Nero Award, for Coyote Waits, and the Navajo Tribe's Special Friends of the Diné Award.
Hillerman, who was born in Sacred Heart, Oklahoma, is a decorated combat veteran from World War II, serving as a mortarman in the 103rd Infantry Division and earning the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart. Later, he worked as a journalist from 1948 to 1962. Then he earned a Masters degree and taught journalism from 1966 to 1987 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he resided with his wife until his death in 2008. Hillerman, a consistently bestselling author, was ranked as New Mexico's 22nd wealthiest man in 1996.
Hillerman's writing is noted for the cultural details he provides for the people he writes about: Hopi, Zuni, European-American, federal agents, and especially Navajo. His works in non-fiction and in fiction reflect his appreciation of the natural wonders of the American Southwest and his appreciation of its people, particularly the Navajo.
Hillerman repeatedly acknowledged his debt to an earlier series of mystery novels set among tribal Aborigines in remote desert regions of tropical and subtropical Australia written the British-born Australian author Arthur W Upfield. The Upfield novels appeared first in 1928 and featured a half-European, half-Aboriginal Australian hero, Detective-inspector Napoleon Bony Bonaparte working with deep understanding of tribal traditions. The character was based on the real-life achievements of an Aborigine known as Tracker Leon, whom Upfield had met during his years in the Australian bush.
Hillerman acknowledged the debt in many interviews, and in his introduction to the posthumous 1984 reprint of Upfield's A Royal Abduction.
In this, he described the seduction in his youth of Upfield's crime novels' descriptions of both the harsh outback areas, and "the people who somehow survived upon them ... . When my own Jim Chee of the Navaho Tribal Police unravels a mystery because he understands the ways of his people, when he reads the signs in the sandy bottom of a reservation arroyo, he is walking in the tracks Bony made 50 years ago."
Upfield and Hillerman are recognized as pioneers of what is now known as the tribal mystery genre.

Sharod Roddy Lamor White was born November 2, 1981 in James Island, South Carolina. He is 26 years old now. Roddy White is an American football wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League. He was selected with the 27th pick overall in the 2005 NFL Draft out of the UAB.
Atlanta Falcons Training Camp: Roddy White running drills

White saw instantaneous action in his rookie campaign. He ranked fourth among all rookie receivers in 2005. Although a high ankle sprain caused him to remain on the sidelines for much of the preseason, he recovered by Week 2 of the 2005 season and was put on the team's roster. In Week 4 of the 2005 season, against the Minnesota Vikings, he was inserted in the lineup as the No. 3 receiver. During the course of the game he racked up 64 yards on 5 catches. However, during the rest of the season, his performance was spotty at best. He made a fantastic leaping catch over three defenders on a trick play against the New Orleans Saints during Week 14 for a 54-yd touchdown, but dropped a touchdown catch the next week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, although he had a 108-yard receiving performance vs. Tampa Bay (11/20) which was the second-highest receiving total put up by a rookie wide receiver in 2005, only surpassed by Jaguars WR Matt Jones (117 yards vs. Baltimore).
Roddy White talking about Bobby Petrino leaving.

In the Falcons 2007 game against the New Orleans Saints, White showed his support for fellow Falcon Michael Vick by wearing a t-shirt that said "Free Mike Vick" and pulling up his jersey after scoring a touchdown. Earlier that day, Vick was sentenced to 23 months in jail on dogfighting charges. White was fined $10,000 by the league for his actions.
Roddy White became the first Falcon WR since 1999 to reach 1,000 single season receiving yards on December 23, 2007. He also finished tied for 8th among all NFL wide receivers in receiving yards in 2007 with 1,202 yards. He had 6 receiving touchdowns.
Roddy White's 2008 performance looks to be even better than the previous year. Through five weeks he has 26 receptions, 454 receiving yards (3rd in the NFL) and 2 touchdowns. He is on pace to have 1,450+ receiving yards in 2008, behind quarterback Matt Ryan.

As of the end of the 2008 season, Timlin ranks seventh in appearances among all-time pitchers, with 1058 appearances. He is second among active pitchers, behind only Mike Stanton.
An important man in the Boston bullpen and a veteran setup man, Timlin has a good command of his 93-MPH fastball. He also throws a slider and a sinker that have a downward break, inducing a significant number of ground balls.
Red Sox Players Celebrate Division Win

In 2004, Timlin made 76 pitching appearances, the third most in Red Sox history and tied for fourth in American League history. On September 3, he made his 800th major league appearance, becoming only the 29th pitcher in major league history to reach that mark. Timlin made his 1,000th career appearance on August 31, 2007, against the Baltimore Orioles.
After his first three successful seasons with the Red Sox, Timlin struggled in 2006 and the beginning of 2007 due to injuries to his right shoulder and left oblique, making multiple visits to the disabled list. In the period after his return from the disabled list through July 23, 2007, Timlin recorded over 14 consecutive scoreless innings and appeared to have overcome any shoulder issues. In the week following, however, he has again experienced shoulder soreness. Since then, however, Timlin has once again stepped in as an important setup man for the Red Sox. Russian boxer Alexander Povetkin vs Taurus Sykes boxing

Taurus Jabbar Sykes was born May 20, 1975. He is a professional boxer. He has been fighting as a heavyweight, and has fought against several contenders, and currently holds a record of 24-4-1. Former two-time heavyweight champ Hasim Rahman beat him in a 10-round decision. He was knocked out in four rounds by IBF 1 contender Alexander Povetkin in Moscow on July 19, 2008.
High stakes for boxing's Russian Knight Povetkin

Sykes who hails from Brooklyn is nicknamed The Bull, due to his first name turned pro in 1998. He lost his 13th fight to unbeaten Owen Beck but that remained his only blemish on his record for a while in that he beat the likes of Israel Garcia (record 10-0), Charles Hatcher (15-2), Talmadge Griffis (21-1-3) and Sherman Williams to climb up the ladder. He drew with former Cruiser title holder Imamu Mayfield then beat Jovo Pudar (21-1) and even fringe contender Friday Ahunanya (20-2-1) in 2005. His only problem was his lack of power as only 7 of his first 25 wins have come the short route.
Undefeated KO artist Samuel Peter was the first to knock him out but lightly regarded southpaw Derek Bryant (18-4-1) also scored a TKO effectively ending any hopes of becoming a contender. Info (c) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taurus_Sykes
Russian Knight getting ready to rumble

Aleksander Vladimirovich Povetkin (age 28) was born in Kursk, Russia on September 2, 1979. He is a Russian boxer. His height is 6' 2" (188 centimeters). Because of his amateur success, as well as his early pro accomplishments, he is seen as the leading contender in professional boxing's Heavyweight division.
Povetkin has a wife, Irina, and a four-year old daughter named Arina. He also has a brother, Vladimir, who fights as a professional light heavyweight. Both fighters are trained by Valery Belov.
In July, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) announced it had created a four person tournament to create a challenger for current IBF (and WBO) champion Wladimir Klitschko.
On October 27, 2007 Povetkin met former title holder Chris Byrd, who had lost his title to Klitschko the year before. Povetkin won the fight by way of an 11th round TKO victory. Byrd put up more resistance than Donald, but ultimately, was overwhelmed and his corner threw in the towel. Less than a week later, Eddie Chambers won a split decision victory over former title challenger Calvin Brock. This advanced both Povetkin and Chambers to the final round of the tournament. On January 26, 2008, Povetkin defeated Chambers by unanimous decision to become the mandatory challenger for Klitschko, whom he will fight in light of Klitschko's victory over Thompson on July 12, 2008.

Alexander Frei Swiss footballer

Alexander Frei (age 28) was born 15 July 1979 in Basel. He is a Swiss footballer.
Within the first half of the opening match of Euro 2008, Frei was injured while captaining the Swiss team. Frei is likely to miss the rest of the tournament due to the injury.
This photo by Author Benutzer:Cooper at de.wikipedia (c) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Alex_frei.jpg
Frei played for Switzerland at Euro 2004 and at the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany. He scored two goals in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, one in the match against Togo and a controversial goal against South Korea. Until now he has been capped 58 times for his country (as of June 2008).
Frei is Switzerland's all time top scorer with 35 goals.
During Euro 2004, in a group match against England, Frei was caught on camera appearing to spit at Steven Gerrard. Although no action was taken at the time, Frei was later charged and given a provisional 15 day suspension by UEFA. Despite this, he was subsequently cleared of the charge on appeal and atoned by agreeing to take care of a llama.
Frei signed a 4-year contract with Borussia Dortmund on 29 June, 2007. Dortmund paid a transfer fee of approximately 5 million euros for him. From the end of the 2006–07 season he has been continually linked with Celtic, whether this move will materialise however is in doubt after Borussia Dortmund released a statement insisting that Frei would go nowhere, even if a club offered 25 million euros.
Frei was the highest goalscorer in the French league for the 2004-05 season with 20 goals, playing for Rennes and was named Swiss Footballer of the year the same season.
He has recovered from a long-term injury this season at current club Borussia Dortmund to score six times in his last eight appearances and prove his fitness for the forthcoming European Football Championships - for which the Schweitzer Nati will be co-hosts along with Austria.

Fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent biography

The best Fashion designer died in France.
Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent (aged 71)
was born August 1, 1936 and died June 1, 2008.He was a French pied noir fashion designer, and was considered among the greatest of the 20th century.
In 1985, in his book, Couture: The Great Fashion Designers, Caroline Rennolds Milbank wrote, "The most consistently celebrated and influential designer of the past twenty-five years, Yves Saint Laurent can be credited with both spurring the couture's rise from its Sixties ashes and with finally rendering ready-to-wear reputable". The son of an insurance company president, Yves Saint Laurent was born on August 1, 1936 in Oran, in what was then French Algeria. Saint Laurent left home at the age of 17 to work for the French designer Christian Dior. Following Dior's death in 1957, Yves, at the age of 22, was put in charge of the effort of saving the Dior house from financial ruin. Shortly after this success, he was conscripted to serve in the French army during the Algerian War of Independence. After 20 days, the stress of being hazed by fellow soldiers, led the fragile Saint Laurent to be institutionalized in a French mental hospital, where he underwent psychiatric treatment, including electroshock therapy, for a nervous breakdown.

In 1962, in the wake of his nervous breakdown, Saint Laurent was released from Dior and started his own label, YSL, financed by his companion, Pierre Bergé. The couple split romantically in 1976 but remained business partners. During the 1960s and 1970s, the firm popularized fashion trends such as the beatnik look, safari jackets for men and women, tight pants and tall, thigh-high boots, including the creation of arguably the most famous classic tuxedo suit for women in 1966, Le Smoking suit. He also started mainstreaming the idea of wearing silhouettes from the 1920s, '30s and '40s. He was the first, in 1966, to popularize ready-to-wear in an attempt to democratize fashion, with Rive Gauche and the boutique of the same name.
He was also the first designer to use black models in his runway shows. Among his muses were Loulou de la Falaise, the daughter of a French marquis and an Anglo-Irish fashion model; Betty Catroux, the half-Brazilian daughter of an American diplomat and wife of a French decorator; Talitha Pol-Getty, who died of drug overdose in 1971; Catherine Deneuve, the iconic French actress; and the Guinean-born Senegalese supermodel Katoucha Niane, the daughter of writer Djibril Tamsir Niane. Ambassador to the couturier during the late 1970s and early 80s was London socialite millionairess Diane Boulting-Casserley Vandelli, making the brand ever more popular amongst the European jet-set and upper classes.
In 1983, he became the first living fashion designer to be honored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2001, he was awarded the rank of Commander of the Légion d'Honneur by French president Jacques Chirac.
Saint Laurent retired in 2002 and became increasingly reclusive. From then until his death he spent much of his time at his house in Marrakech, Morocco.
He also created a foundation with Pierre Bergé in Paris to trace the history of the house of YSL, complete with 15,000 objects and 5,000 pieces of clothing.
He died on June 1, 2008, at home in Paris after a year-long fight against brain cancer.

funny David Letterman George Bush Top 10 list Late Show

David Letterman Makes Fun of Bush in Front of President George Bush
George Bush Top 10 list Late Show
When President George Bush sat through a Top Ten list from the Late Show with David Letterman making fun of Bush at the April 21 White House Correspondents Dinner, Bush wasted no time patting himself on the back for his openness to criticism. In this video, however, I put together a few clips to ask some real questions about whether the Bush Administration has actually opened itself up to substantive dissenting opinions. David Michael Letterman was born April 12, 1947. He is an Emmy Award-winning American television host and comedian. His first major success occurred on the long-running NBC television program, Late Night with David Letterman, before moving to CBS in 1993 to his current place on the Late Show. In 1969, Letterman married Michelle Cook; the marriage ended by divorce in 1977. He also had a long-term relationship with former head writer and producer on Late Night, Merrill Markoe. Letterman has a son, Harry Joseph, (born November 3, 2003) with longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko. Harry is named for Letterman's father, Harry Joe Letterman, who died at age 57 . The family resides in North Salem, New York.
Letterman's ironic, often absurd comedy is heavily influenced by former Tonight Show hosts Steve Allen, Johnny Carson and Jack Paar.
NBC kept Letterman under contract to try him in a different time slot, after which Late Night with David Letterman debuted in 1982. Letterman's show, which ran weeknights at 12:30 a.m. eastern time, immediately following The Tonight Show, quickly established a reputation as being edgy and unpredictable, and soon developed a cult following (particularly among college students). Letterman's reputation as an acerbic interviewer was borne out of moments such as his verbal sparring matches with Cher and Shirley MacLaine. The show also featured inventive comedy segments and running characters, in a style heavily influenced by the 1950s and 60s programs of Steve Allen. The show often included quirky, genre-mocking regular features, including "Stupid Pet Tricks," dropping various objects off the roof of a five story building, a recurring Top 10 list, and a facetious letter-answering segment.
Other memorable moments included Letterman once using a bullhorn to interrupt a live interview on The Today Show, announcing that he was the NBC president and not wearing any pants; interrupting Al Roker on the Live at Five local news by walking into their studio which occupied the same building as Letterman's studio; and staging elevator races with commentary by NBC Sports' Bob Costas. In one highly publicized appearance, Andy Kaufman appeared to be slapped and knocked to the ground by professional wrestler Jerry Lawler. (Lawler and Kaufman's friend Bob Zmuda later revealed that the event was staged.

Ricky Martin Radio Interview talk about girlfriend

Ricky Martin en New York, Enero 2008.

Ricky has said in many interviews he isn't gay, but he should come right out and say so. It is taking people away from real topics like his music and humanitarian work.
Although at the same time, I admire him for not wanting to get caught up in the labels and sexuality obsessions of society. He is very enlightened and detached from his ego. Rare in showbiz.
he is not gay . he dated Rebecca de alba a mexican host for years and who know ? maybe they will end up together. Thanx 4 the video I really liked it . it's really rare to see a video with Ricky talking about his girlfriend.

However, Gracie is an elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor with years of training under his belt as well being the mentor of students such as Nathan Diaz and Nick Diaz
Cung Le vs Frank Shamrock

On September 14, 2006, it was announced that Frank Shamrock had signed a multi-million dollar contract with startup MMA organization "The World Fighter" and was said to be scheduled to fight in January 2007. However, Shamrock told Sherdog that the World Fighter contract no longer applied because it was entirely contingent on the organization getting a television contract with Showtime; the cable network instead agreed to air fights for the EliteXC promotion.
Cung Le Strike Vs Frank Shamrock Strike Force

On January 11, 2008, it was announced that Shamrock would face Cung Le in a highly anticipated match on March 29, 2008, as the top draw for the joint Strikeforce-Elite XC event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. Shamrock mostly decided to keep everything stand-up as he promised before the fight, but did attempt several takedowns, at one point even inviting Cung Le to the ground (to which Cung Le declined). Cung Le arguably controlled the fight, at times outstriking the more MMA-experienced Shamrock, and perhaps winning the first 2 rounds. At one point in the later stages of round 3 Shamrock appeared to have Le hurt but was unable to finish him with a barrage of punches against the cage, Le responded in the closing seconds of the round with more kicks and a spinning backfist. At the start of round 4, Frank was unable to answer the bell due to accumulated punishment from Cung Le's kicks, Frank indicating post fight that these kicks had broken his right arm, thus making Cung Le the new Strickforce middleweight champion of the world.

On February 10, 2007, Shamrock lost his fight by disqualification to Renzo Gracie during the EliteXC event which was televised on Showtime. Shamrock delivered two accidental knee to Gracie's head while both men were on the ground. After a five minute injury time out, Gracie was unable to continue. Referee Herb Dean then disqualified Shamrock due to a foul (illegal strikes to the back of the head, and knees to the head of a grounded opponent). Dean reasoned that he had already warned Shamrock once earlier in the fight about striking to the back of the head--an illegal move under the American Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts.

Sandy Koufax biography Baseball

Sanford Koufax (age 72) was born Sanford Braun, on December 30, 1935. He is an American left-handed former pitcher in Major League Baseball who played his entire career for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, from 1955 to 1966.
In 1967, he signed a ten-year contract with NBC for $1 million to be a broadcaster on the Saturday Game of the Week. Never feeling comfortable in front of the camera, he quit after six years, just prior to the start of the 1973 season.
Koufax married Anne Widmark, daughter of movie star Richard Widmark, in 1969; the couple was divorced in the 1980s. He then remarried and divorced again in the 1990s.
In his first year of eligibility in 1972, Koufax was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, just weeks after his 36th birthday. His election made him the Hall's youngest member ever, five months younger than Lou Gehrig upon his induction in 1939. On June 4 of that same year, Koufax's uniform number 32 was retired alongside those of Dodger greats Roy Campanella (39) and Jackie Robinson (42).
The Dodgers hired Koufax to be a minor league pitching coach in 1979. He resigned in 1990, saying he wasn't earning his keep, but most observers blamed it on his uneasy relationship with manager Tommy Lasorda. In 2003, Koufax discontinued his relationship with the Dodgers when the New York Post (which, like the Dodgers, had become part of Rupert Murdoch's business empire) published a story reporting rumors about his sexual orientation, and implying that Koufax was gay. Koufax returned to the Dodger organization in 2004 when the Dodgers were sold to Frank McCourt.
In 1999, The Sporting News placed Koufax at number 26 on its list of "The 100 Greatest Baseball Players." That same year, he was named as one of the 30 players on the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. Although he rarely makes public appearances, he went to Turner Field in Atlanta for the introduction ceremony before Game 2 of the World Series.
In an article in 1976 in Esquire magazine, sportswriter Harry Stein published an "All Time All-Star Argument Starter," consisting of five ethnic baseball teams. Koufax was the left-handed pitcher on Stein's Jewish team.
41 years after he retired from baseball, Koufax was the final player chosen in the inaugural Israel Baseball League draft in April 2007. Koufax, 71, was picked by the Modi'in Miracle. "His selection is a tribute to the esteem with which he is held by everyone associated with this league," said Art Shamsky, who will manage the Miracle. "It's been 41 years between starts for him. If he's rested and ready to take the mound again, we want him on our team." He'll be working on 14,875 days rest, as has been pointed out.
On May 14, 2007, Upper Deck Authenticated signed Koufax to an exclusive autograph and memorabilia agreement.
